Description

This Popeyes-style Cajun Rice is a savory, hearty side dish packed with seasoned ground beef, fluffy rice, and bold Cajun flavors. It is easy to prepare in one skillet and makes a delicious addition to fried chicken, seafood, or any Southern-inspired meal.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 2 cups long-grain rice
  • ¼ cup diced green bell pepper
  • ¼ cup diced onion
  • 4 cups beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon Creole or Cajun seasoning
  • ⅛ teaspoon cayenne pepper, optional
  • ¼ teaspoon celery seed
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add the ground beef.
  2. Cook the beef, breaking it into small crumbles, until browned and fully cooked.
  3. Add the diced onion and green bell pepper. Cook for several minutes until the vegetables soften.
  4. Drain excess grease from the skillet if necessary.
  5. Stir in the long-grain rice.
  6. Pour in the beef broth and add the garlic powder, Cajun seasoning, cayenne pepper, celery seed, and black pepper.
  7. Stir everything together and bring the mixture to a boil.
  8. Reduce the heat to low and cover the skillet with a lid.
  9. Simmer for 18–20 minutes, or until the rice is tender and the liquid has been absorbed.
  10. Remove the skillet from the heat and let it rest for a few minutes.
  11. Fluff the rice gently with a fork.
  12. Taste and adjust the seasonings if needed.
  13. Serve warm as a side dish or hearty main meal.

Notes

  • Serve Cajun Rice alongside fried chicken, grilled chicken, shrimp, blackened fish, or roasted vegetables.
  • Add chopped green onions or fresh parsley before serving for extra freshness.
  • A little hot sauce can add another layer of flavor for those who enjoy spicy food.
  • Store cooled leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3–4 days.
  • Reheat individual portions in the microwave with a small splash of broth or water to keep the rice moist.
  • For stovetop reheating, warm the rice over low heat with a tablespoon or two of broth, stirring occasionally.
  • Freeze completely cooled rice in freezer-safe containers for up to 2–3 months.
  • Thaw frozen rice overnight in the refrigerator before reheating for the best texture.
