Poor Man’s Apple Cobbler

  • Author: Lusine Svetlana

Description

Poor Man’s Apple Cobbler is a simple, budget-friendly dessert made with just a handful of pantry staples. A buttery, golden cake-like topping forms around sweet apple pie filling, creating a warm and comforting dessert that is perfect for family dinners, holidays, or an easy weeknight treat.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup self-rising flour
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 stick butter
  • 1 can apple pie filling

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  2. Place the butter in a baking dish and put it in the oven until the butter has completely melted.
  3. In a mixing bowl, combine the sugar, self-rising flour, milk, and vanilla extract.
  4. Stir until the batter is smooth and well combined.
  5. Carefully pour the batter over the melted butter in the baking dish.
  6. Spoon the apple pie filling evenly over the top of the batter.
  7. Do not stir or mix the layers together.
  8. Bake for about 45 minutes, or until the cobbler is golden brown and bubbly around the edges.
  9. Remove from the oven and allow it to cool slightly before serving.

Notes

  • Serve the cobbler warm for the best texture and flavor.
  • Add a scoop of vanilla ice cream for a classic combination.
  • Whipped cream makes an easy topping if you do not have ice cream.
  • A light drizzle of caramel sauce adds extra sweetness and richness.
  • Sprinkle a little cinnamon over each serving for more apple-pie flavor.
  • Store leftover cobbler covered in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
  • Reheat individual portions in the microwave for about 20 to 40 seconds.
  • For a larger portion, reheat it in a 300°F oven until warmed through.
  • If making it ahead, allow it to cool completely before covering and refrigerating.
  • The cobbler can be enjoyed cold, but reheating brings back its soft, buttery texture.
