Polish Cucumber Salad/Mizeria

  • Author: Lusine Svetlana

Description

Polish Cucumber Salad, also known as Mizeria, is a refreshing side dish made with thinly sliced cucumbers, creamy sour cream, fresh dill, and a touch of vinegar. It’s quick, easy to prepare, and perfect for summer meals, family dinners, barbecues, and potlucks.

Ingredients

  • 1 large English cucumber (or regular garden cucumber)
  • Salt, as needed
  • ⅓ cup full-fat sour cream
  • 1 tablespoon white vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons fresh dill, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon green onions, minced
  • 1 teaspoon white granulated sugar
  • Black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Wash the cucumber thoroughly and peel the skin using a vegetable peeler.
  2. Slice the cucumber into very thin rounds.
  3. Arrange the cucumber slices on a plate and sprinkle lightly with salt.
  4. Let the cucumbers sit for approximately 5 minutes to release excess moisture.
  5. Gently pat the cucumber slices dry with paper towels.
  6. In a mixing bowl, combine the sour cream, white vinegar, sugar, chopped dill, and minced green onions.
  7. Whisk the dressing until smooth and creamy.
  8. Season the dressing with black pepper. Avoid adding extra salt at this stage because the cucumbers are already salted.
  9. Add the cucumber slices to the dressing and gently toss until evenly coated.
  10. Taste and adjust the seasoning with additional salt or pepper if needed.
  11. Garnish with fresh dill and serve immediately.

Notes

  • Serve chilled: Refrigerate the salad for 15–20 minutes before serving for an extra-refreshing taste.
  • Perfect side dish: Pair it with grilled chicken, roasted pork, baked fish, potatoes, or grilled sausages.
  • Slice thinly: Use a sharp knife or mandoline to create evenly sliced cucumbers.
  • Remove excess moisture: Always salt and pat the cucumbers dry to prevent watery dressing.
  • Make ahead: Prepare the dressing separately and slice the cucumbers shortly before serving.
  • Refrigeration: Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1–2 days. The cucumbers may release additional moisture over time.
  • Avoid freezing: Freezing is not recommended because cucumbers lose their crisp texture and sour cream dressing may separate.
  • Fresh garnish: Add extra chopped dill and green onions just before serving for the best flavor.
