If you love the iconic crispy apple pies from McDonald’s, this homemade version delivers the same golden, flaky texture with a rich cinnamon-apple filling—only fresher and even more flavorful. Baking them at home gives you full control over sweetness, ingredients, and texture, making these hand pies a perfect dessert or snack for any occasion.
Ingredients
- ¼ cup (2 oz/57 g) butter
- 4 apples, peeled, cored, and finely diced
- ⅔ cup (4 oz/115 g) brown sugar
- 2 teaspoons cinnamon
- ½ teaspoon salt
- Juice of 1 lemon
- 3 teaspoons cornflour
- 1 tablespoon water
- 2 batches puff pastry (homemade or store-bought)
- Egg wash (1 egg beaten with a little water or milk)
- Cinnamon sugar for dusting
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper
- In a saucepan, melt butter and add apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, salt, and lemon juice
- Cook over medium heat until apples soften and liquid reduces
- Mix cornflour and water to form a slurry, then stir into apple mixture
- Cook for 2 minutes until thickened, then remove from heat
- Let filling cool completely before using
- Roll out puff pastry to about ⅛ inch thickness
- Cut into 8 rectangles (approx. 4.5 x 6 inches)
- Place 1–2 teaspoons of filling in the center of each rectangle
- Brush edges with egg wash or milk, fold over, and seal with a fork
- Cut small slits on top for ventilation
- Brush tops with egg wash and sprinkle with cinnamon sugar
- Bake for 25–30 minutes until golden and crisp
- Serve warm
