Made with simple pantry ingredients, these charming heart-shaped treats are perfect for Valentine’s Day, holidays, birthdays, afternoon tea, or homemade gifts. They are easy to prepare, fun to decorate, and delicious with a cup of coffee or tea.
Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- ½ cup cornstarch
- ½ cup butter or margarine, softened
- ¾ cup icing sugar
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ½ teaspoon baking powder
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons milk, if needed
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 170°C (340°F) and line a baking tray with parchment paper.
- In a large mixing bowl, cream the softened butter and icing sugar until light, smooth, and fluffy.
- Add the egg and vanilla extract, then mix until well combined.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, cornstarch, baking powder, and salt.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture and mix until a soft dough forms.
- Add the milk a little at a time if the dough feels too dry or crumbly.
- Lightly flour your work surface and roll out the dough to approximately ½ cm thick.
- Use a heart-shaped cookie cutter to cut out the cookies.
- Arrange the cookies on the prepared baking tray, leaving a little space between each one.
- Bake for 12–15 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden. Avoid overbaking to keep the cookies tender.
- Let the cookies cool on the tray for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack.
- Allow them to cool completely before decorating, serving, or storing.
