- 1 ½ pounds ground beef
- 1 ounce onion soup mix
- 1 medium onion, sliced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced

- Brown the ground beef in a nonstick skillet over medium-high heat until no longer pink.
- Add the onion soup mix halfway through cooking and stir well.
- Transfer the cooked beef to a paper towel-lined plate using a slotted spoon, leaving the drippings in the skillet.
- Add the sliced onions to the same skillet and cook for 5–8 minutes, or until caramelized.
- Add the minced garlic and cooked ground beef to the caramelized onions.
- Stir in the two cans of cream of mushroom soup and bring the mixture to a gentle simmer.
- Remove the skillet from the heat.
- Fold in the cooked egg noodles until evenly coated.
- Transfer the mixture to the prepared baking dish and spread it evenly.
- Sprinkle the shredded Swiss cheese over the top.
- Add the crispy French fried onions.
- Cover the casserole completely with foil.
- Bake for 20 minutes.
- Remove the foil and bake for another 5 minutes, until the cheese is melted and the topping is crispy.
- Remove from the oven and let the casserole stand for 2 minutes.
- Garnish with sliced green onions, if desired, and serve warm.
Notes
- Serve this casserole hot with a simple green salad or steamed vegetables for a complete meal.
- Pair it with roasted broccoli, green beans, or glazed carrots for extra vegetables.
- Garlic bread or crusty dinner rolls are great for soaking up the creamy sauce.
- Let the casserole rest for a few minutes before serving so the sauce can settle.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3–4 days.
- Reheat individual portions in the microwave until heated through.
- For larger portions, cover the casserole with foil and reheat in a 325°F oven until hot.
- If making ahead, assemble the casserole without the crispy fried onion topping and refrigerate it until ready to bake.
- Add the fried onions just before baking so they remain crunchy.
- Freeze cooled leftovers in a freezer-safe container for up to 2–3 months.
- Thaw frozen casserole overnight in the refrigerator before reheating for the best texture.
