Ingredients
- 3 tablespoons butter
- 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups chicken broth
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- ½ teaspoon onion powder
- ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon chicken bouillon (optional, for extra flavor)
Instructions
- Melt the butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat.
- Whisk in the flour and cook for about 1 minute, stirring constantly to form a smooth roux.
- Gradually pour in the chicken broth while whisking continuously to prevent lumps.
- Add the black pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and optional chicken bouillon.
- Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer, stirring frequently.
- Cook for 5–7 minutes, or until the gravy thickens to your desired consistency.
- Taste and adjust the seasoning, adding extra black pepper or a little more broth if needed.
- Remove from the heat and serve warm over mashed potatoes, fried chicken, biscuits, or other favorite dishes.
Notes
- Serve warm: Pour the gravy over creamy mashed potatoes, crispy fried chicken, chicken tenders, or freshly baked biscuits.
- For a classic comfort meal: Pair it with fried chicken, corn, and buttery mashed potatoes.
- Adjust the thickness: Add a splash of warm chicken broth if the gravy becomes too thick.
- Keep it smooth: Whisk continuously while adding the broth, and strain the gravy through a fine-mesh sieve if any lumps remain.
- Refrigeration: Store leftover gravy in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3–4 days.
- Freezing: Freeze the cooled gravy in a freezer-safe container for up to 3 months for best quality. The texture may change slightly after thawing.
- Reheating: Warm gently in a saucepan over low heat, stirring frequently. Add a little broth or water to restore the original consistency.
- Make-ahead tip: Prepare the gravy shortly before serving, or make it ahead and reheat gently with extra broth as needed.
- Food safety: Refrigerate leftovers within 2 hours of cooking and reheat to 165°F (74°C).
