Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 cups white sugar
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ cup sour cream
- 2 eggs
- 1 cup butter
- 1 cup water
- 5 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
- 6 tablespoons milk
- 5 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder (for icing)
- ½ cup butter (for icing)
- 4 cups confectioners’ sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup chopped walnuts (Optional)
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Pan and Oven
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 10×15 inch baking pan, making sure to dust it with flour for easy cake release.
Step 2: Mix the Dry and Wet Ingredients
In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt. Add the sour cream and eggs, beating the mixture until smooth. In a separate saucepan over low heat, melt the butter, then add the water and 5 tablespoons of cocoa powder. Bring the mixture to a boil and remove from heat. Let it cool slightly before incorporating it into the egg mixture, blending until smooth.
Step 3: Bake the Cake
Pour the batter into your prepared pan and bake for 20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Once done, remove the cake from the oven and set it aside to cool.
Step 4: Prepare the Icing
In another saucepan, combine the milk, 5 tablespoons of cocoa powder, and ½ cup butter. Bring this mixture to a boil before removing it from the heat. Gradually stir in the confectioners’ sugar and vanilla extract until smooth. If you like a little crunch, fold in the chopped walnuts. Spread the icing over the warm cake, allowing it to set.
Optional: Adding Nuts
For those who love a bit of texture in their cakes, adding chopped walnuts to the icing is a great option. It gives the cake a delightful crunch and an extra layer of flavor. If you prefer a smooth finish, you can leave them out.
Notes
Serving Tips
- Best Served Warm: Texas Sheet Cake is at its most delicious when served warm, allowing the icing to remain soft and gooey. You can serve it directly from the pan to maintain its rustic charm.
- Toppings: While the cake is fantastic on its own, you can top each slice with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for an extra indulgence. A sprinkle of chopped walnuts or a drizzle of caramel sauce can also enhance the presentation.
- Perfect for Parties: Cut the cake into squares or smaller bite-sized pieces to serve at parties or potlucks. Its thin, rich layers make it ideal for sharing.
Storage Tips
- Room Temperature: Texas Sheet Cake can be stored at room temperature for up to 3-4 days. Be sure to cover the cake with plastic wrap or place it in an airtight container to prevent it from drying out.
- Refrigeration: If you prefer to extend its shelf life, you can store the cake in the refrigerator for up to a week. The icing will firm up, but the cake will still retain its delicious flavor. Let it sit at room temperature for a few minutes before serving.
- Freezing: For longer storage, Texas Sheet Cake freezes well. Wrap individual portions in plastic wrap and store them in a freezer-safe container for up to 3 months. When ready to enjoy, thaw the cake in the refrigerator or at room temperature and warm in the microwave for a few seconds for a fresh, soft texture.
These tips ensure you can enjoy your Texas Sheet Cake at its best, whether serving it fresh or saving leftovers for later!
