1. Prepare the Meatball Mixture
In a medium-sized bowl, combine 1 pound of ground beef, ¼ cup panko bread crumbs, 1 tablespoon chopped parsley, ¼ teaspoon ground allspice, ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg, ¼ cup finely chopped onion, ½ teaspoon garlic powder, ⅛ teaspoon pepper, ½ teaspoon salt, and 1 egg. Add the meatballs back to the skillet, simmering for another 1-2 minutes to let the flavors meld together.
6. Serve
Serve the Swedish meatballs over egg noodles or rice for a complete and satisfying meal.
Notes
Serving Suggestions
- Over Egg Noodles: Serve your Swedish meatballs over a bed of egg noodles. The noodles soak up the creamy gravy, providing a delicious and hearty meal.
- With Mashed Potatoes: For a classic combination, serve the meatballs with creamy mashed potatoes. The smooth texture of the potatoes pairs perfectly with the rich gravy.
- With Rice: Another great option is to serve the meatballs over steamed white or brown rice. This adds a different texture and is a great way to enjoy the flavorful sauce.
- Vegetable Sides: Pair your meatballs with steamed or roasted vegetables such as green beans, broccoli, or carrots for a well-rounded meal.
- Lingonberry Sauce: For an authentic Swedish touch, serve with a side of lingonberry sauce. The tartness of the sauce complements the rich and savory meatballs.
Storage Tips
- Refrigeration: Allow the meatballs and gravy to cool to room temperature. Transfer to an airtight container and store in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. When reheating, you may want to add a splash of beef broth or cream to keep the gravy creamy.
- Freezing: For longer storage, you can freeze the meatballs and gravy. Place them in a freezer-safe container or heavy-duty freezer bag, label with the date, and freeze for up to 2-3 months. Thaw in the refrigerator overnight before reheating.
- Reheating: Reheat the meatballs and gravy on the stove over medium heat, stirring occasionally until heated through. You can also reheat individual portions in the microwave, stirring halfway through to ensure even heating.
By following these serving and storage tips, you can enjoy your Swedish Meatballs fresh or as delicious leftovers, ensuring nothing goes to waste.
