Ingredients
For the Salisbury Steaks:
• 1 pound ground beef
• 1/2 cup bread crumbs
• 2 tablespoons ketchup
• 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
• 1 teaspoon mustard powder
• 1 egg
• Salt and pepper to taste
• 2 tablespoons butter
For the Gravy:
• 1 tablespoon olive oil
• 6 ounces mushrooms, sliced
• 1/2 large onion, sliced
• 2 1/2 cups beef broth
• 2 tablespoons ketchup
• 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
• 1 tablespoon cornstarch
• 1 tablespoon water
Instructions
- In a mixing bowl, combine ground beef, bread crumbs, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, mustard powder, egg, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until combined.
- Shape the mixture into 4 oval-shaped patties.
- Heat butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the patties and cook on each side until browned and cooked through. Remove and set aside.
- Add olive oil to the same skillet along with mushrooms and onions. Sauté until tender and golden brown. Remove and set aside.
- Pour beef broth, ketchup, and Worcestershire sauce into the skillet. In a small bowl, mix cornstarch and water to form a slurry.
- Stir the slurry into the gravy mixture and bring to a boil, whisking continuously until the sauce begins to thicken.
- Reduce the heat to medium-low, return the mushrooms, onions, and beef patties to the skillet, and simmer for 5–10 minutes to allow flavors to blend.
- Taste and season with salt and pepper as needed.
- Serve warm over mashed potatoes or rice and garnish with chopped parsley if desired.
Notes
- Serving: Serve your Salisbury steak hot over creamy mashed potatoes, fluffy rice, or buttered egg noodles. Add a side of steamed peas, carrots, or green beans for a complete meal.
- Make it a comfort platter: Spoon plenty of rich mushroom gravy over the steaks and sides for that homestyle diner feel.
- Storage: Allow leftovers to cool completely before storing. Place in an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 3 days.
- Freezing: You can freeze the cooked patties with gravy for up to 2 months. For best results, store portions separately for easy reheating.
- Reheating: Reheat on the stovetop over medium heat or in the microwave until warm. Add a splash of beef broth if the gravy thickens too much.
