Sausage Gravy Puff Pie

  • Author: Lusine Svetlana

Description

Craving a cozy and hearty meal that’s both flaky and flavorful? This sausage gravy puff pie is the perfect dish to serve for breakfast, brunch, or even dinner. Packed with savory sausage, creamy gravy, and wrapped in a buttery puff pastry crust, this comfort food classic is both satisfying and simple to make. Whether you’re feeding a family or entertaining guests, this dish is sure to impress with its golden, crispy exterior and rich, indulgent filling.

Ingredients

1 lb sausage
¼ cup all-purpose flour
2 cups milk
Salt and black pepper, to taste
1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.

  • In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the sausage, breaking it up with a spoon, until fully browned and no longer pink.

  • Sprinkle the flour evenly over the cooked sausage. Stir well to coat and cook for 1–2 minutes to eliminate the raw flour taste.

  • Gradually pour in the milk, stirring constantly until the mixture thickens into a creamy gravy. Season with salt and black pepper to taste. Remove from heat and let the gravy cool slightly.

  • Roll out the thawed puff pastry on a lightly floured surface or directly onto the prepared baking sheet.

  • Spoon the cooled sausage gravy evenly onto one half of the puff pastry, leaving a 1-inch border around the edges.

  • Fold the other half of the pastry over the filling to create a rectangle. Press the edges together firmly with a fork to seal.

  • Brush the top of the pastry with the beaten egg for a golden, glossy finish.

  • Bake for 20–25 minutes or until the puff pastry is golden brown and fully cooked.

  • Remove from the oven and let the pie rest for 5–10 minutes before slicing and serving warm.

Notes

Serving Tips
Serve the sausage gravy puff pie warm, straight from the oven, for the best flavor and texture. Slice it into generous squares or wedges and pair it with classic breakfast sides like scrambled eggs, crispy hash browns, or a light arugula salad. For brunch gatherings, add a fruit platter or yogurt parfaits for a balanced spread. It also makes a cozy dinner when served with roasted vegetables or a bowl of soup.

Storage Tips
To store leftovers, allow the puff pie to cool completely, then transfer it to an airtight container. Refrigerate for up to 3 days. To reheat, place slices on a baking sheet and warm in a 350°F oven for 10–12 minutes to restore the puff pastry’s crispness. Avoid microwaving, as it may make the crust soggy. For longer storage, wrap the cooled pie tightly in plastic wrap and aluminum foil, then freeze for up to 2 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating in the oven.
