  • 4 tablespoons hot water or as needed

Instructions

  1. Activate the Yeast:
    • In a large measuring jug, combine milk and boiling water. Add a teaspoon of sugar and yeast. Stir gently and let it sit in a warm place until foamy.
  2. Prepare the Dough:
    • In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, remaining sugar, and salt. Cut in butter until it resembles crumbs. Add beaten egg and yeast mixture, mix into a smooth dough (about 5 minutes).
  3. Knead and Rise:
    • Turn dough onto a lightly-floured surface, knead for 5-10 minutes until springy. Place in a bowl, cover, and let rise for about an hour until doubled.
  4. Shape and Rise Again:
    • Divide dough into 4 pieces. Shape each into long ropes, cut into 1-inch pieces, roll into balls. Place on a baking tray, cover, and let rise while heating oil.
  5. Fry the Doughnuts:
    • Heat oil to 375°F (190°C). Fry doughnuts a few at a time until golden (about 2 minutes per side). Drain on paper towels.
  6. Glaze Warm:
    • For the glaze, melt butter, mix in confectioners’ sugar, vanilla, and hot water until smooth. Dip warm doughnuts in glaze.
