If you’re looking for a heartwarming, classic dessert that’s sure to bring back fond memories, Grandma’s Apple Dumplings are the perfect choice. This delightful recipe combines tart Granny Smith apples with a sweet, buttery sauce and a comforting biscuit crust. Baked to perfection, these dumplings offer a deliciously gooey interior and a crisp, golden exterior. Whether you’re hosting a family dinner or simply craving a nostalgic treat, this recipe is a must-try.

Ingredients

  • 2 Granny Smith apples
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup sugar, divided
  • 1 stick butter
  • 1/4 tsp vanilla extract
  • 8 canned biscuits (I use Pillsbury buttermilk)
  • 4 teaspoons ground cinnamon

Instructions

  • 2 Granny Smith apples
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup sugar, divided
  • 1 stick butter
  • 1/4 tsp vanilla extract
  • 8 canned biscuits (I use Pillsbury buttermilk)
  • 4 teaspoons ground cinnamon

Notes

  1. Preheat the Oven
    • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Prepare the Apples
    • Peel, core, and slice the Granny Smith apples vertically into 8 slices each. To prevent browning, cover the apple slices with cold water while you prepare the rest of the recipe.
  3. Make the Sauce
    • In a medium saucepan, combine 1 cup of water, 3/4 cup of sugar, the stick of butter, and vanilla extract. Heat the mixture over medium heat until it reaches a boil. Stir occasionally to ensure the sugar and butter are fully melted and combined.
  4. Wrap the Apples
    • Separate each biscuit in half. Wrap each biscuit dough layer around a slice of apple, stretching it slightly to overlap and seal the bottom. Place the wrapped apple slices, sealed side down, in a 9 x 13-inch baking pan.
  5. Add the Sauce and Cinnamon
    • Pour the hot sugar mixture over the apple slices in the baking pan. Mix the remaining 1/4 cup of sugar with the ground cinnamon and sprinkle it evenly over the tops of the wrapped apples.
  6. Bake
    • Bake the dumplings in the preheated oven for 35 minutes, or until they are golden brown and the biscuit dough is fully cooked.
  7. Serve
    • Serve the apple dumplings warm, ideally with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for an extra indulgent treat.
