Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 4 medium-sized apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1/2 cup apple cider
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 9×13 inch pan with parchment paper for easy removal.
  2. Make the Crust: In a food processor, pulse together flour and granulated sugar. Add cold, cubed butter and pulse until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Press the Crust: Press two-thirds of the crumb mixture into the bottom of the prepared pan to form the crust.
  4. Prepare the Apple Filling: Toss the sliced apples with lemon juice, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until well coated.
  5. Layer the Apples: Spread the apple mixture evenly over the crust in the pan.
  6. Thicken the Mixture: In a small saucepan, combine cornstarch and apple cider. Cook until thick, then stir in vanilla. Pour this mixture over the apple layer.
  7. Top with Crumble: Crumble the remaining flour mixture on top of the apple layer.
  8. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until the top is golden and the filling is bubbly.
  9. Cool and Slice: Allow the bars to cool before slicing into squares.
