This easy Swiss Steak recipe is perfect for family dinners, offering a cozy and flavorful meal that can be cooked in the oven or in a slow cooker. It’s budget-friendly, filling, and pairs beautifully with mashed potatoes, rice, or buttered noodles.

Ingredients

  • 1 ½ pounds round steak
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon paprika
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil (more as needed)
  • 2 yellow onions, chopped
  • 2 carrots, chopped
  • 28 ounces canned diced tomatoes with juices (1 can)
  • 10 ounces beef broth (1 can)
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch (optional, for thickening).

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F.
  2. Pound steak to about ½-inch thickness.
  3. Mix flour, paprika, garlic powder, pepper, and salt. Dredge steak in flour mixture.
  4. Heat olive oil in a Dutch oven over medium heat. Brown steaks on both sides and set aside.
  5. Place onions and carrots in the pot, then layer browned steaks on top.
  6. Add diced tomatoes, beef broth, and Worcestershire sauce. Cover and cook for 2 ½ to 3 hours, until beef is tender.
  7. For a thicker sauce, mix cornstarch with water and stir into the gravy before serving.
  8. Serve hot over mashed potatoes, rice, or noodles.

Notes

  • Serving: Swiss Steak pairs perfectly with mashed potatoes, buttered noodles, or fluffy rice. Add a side of roasted green beans, peas, or fresh salad for balance.
  • Refrigeration: Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days in the fridge.
  • Freezing: Cool completely and freeze in a freezer-safe container for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight before reheating.
  • Reheating: Warm on the stovetop over medium heat, or in the oven at 325°F. Add a splash of beef broth if needed to keep the sauce rich and smooth
