Description

If you’re searching for the perfect crunchy addition to your burgers, salads, or casseroles, look no further than this crispy onion strings recipe. With just a few simple ingredients and 10 minutes from start to finish, you’ll have golden brown, crispy onion strings that taste better than anything store-bought. This quick and easy recipe is perfect for busy weeknights, weekend barbecues, or simply elevating your favorite dishes.

Ingredients

  • Oil for frying
  • 2 large onions, sliced thin
  • 2 cups buttermilk
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 2 teaspoons onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper

Instructions

  • Heat oil in a skillet to 350°F.
  • Slice the onions thin using a sharp knife.
  • Pour buttermilk into a small bowl.
  • In a separate bowl, combine flour, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and pepper.
  • Use tongs to dip the onion slices into the buttermilk.
  • Coat the soaked onions in the seasoned flour mixture.
  • Carefully drop the coated onion strings into the hot oil.
  • Fry for 2–3 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy.
  • Remove and drain on paper towels before serving.

Notes

  • Serving: Enjoy crispy onion strings immediately after frying to experience their best crunch and flavor. They make a perfect topping for burgers, salads, sandwiches, and casseroles, or simply serve them as a crispy snack.

  • Storage: If you have leftovers, let the onion strings cool completely before storing. Place them in an airtight container and keep them in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.

  • Reheating: To restore their crispiness, reheat the onion strings in the oven or air fryer at 350°F (175°C) for 5–7 minutes. Avoid microwaving, as it tends to make them soggy.

  • Freezing: You can freeze cooked onion strings in a single layer on a baking sheet, then transfer to a freezer-safe container or bag. Reheat directly from frozen in the oven or air fryer to maintain their texture.
